Please join us  Sunday Feb. 12th for a MFP team meeting in E70 (in the basement) at 12 o'clock.  I'll provide lunch.  :)
Feel free to invite anyone that you think would be interested in joining our team too.  Just let me know if they are coming for head count.

Sorry to take up part of your weekend...it was too tough to get something during the week and not leave folks out.  In the meantime here are the latest announcements:

1.  We are in a dead heat search for a TD.  Lizzie Eggert got an internship in NYC (sweet!) but it is also during the exhibition (doh) So we need to find a person/persons who can build for us.  Although late March-April will be the biggest push for building, there are elements that can be built now too so even if someone can help now and not later have them contact me.  Evi posted a craigslist call so please pass it on if you can think of someone or email me their info:  http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/cwg/2828152411.html

2.  We gained $300 from the Dean of F/V. :)

3.  Optima, the company who makes the pico projector, has donated one to the project!  AND they are using our installation as a case study for the company!  Woot!

4.  I'm doing a test run of the first "episode" for the dark ride in C108 Thurs Feb. 16th, performance will be between 1 and 4... check back with me on the exact times.  I will also be working in C108 starting Feb. 7th testing out the projections and timing.  Please feel free to stop by and check it out.  I will also put up the magic mirror and your baby as fruit/veg as well so if you haven't seen them yet definitely swing by.

5.  My First Pregnancy now has a calendar page to help keep dates in order:  http://www.eekart.com/myfirstpregnancy/calendar.html

6.  I'm working with Santa Clarita Pregnancy Center on having nurses available to answer questions during the exhibition and also to offer an open lamaze/birthing class in the main gallery during the exhibition week.  Let me know if you have any other ideas on related activities we could host during the exhibition week.

7.  We are currently at $1800 with much more to go... Emily Heller is putting together an indie go go account so let's all send good vibes to full pockets out there.  :)

8.  April 1-3 is a conference on Sexual Education, Youth, and New Media.. right up MFP's alley.  I'm trying to see if I could bring the Magic Mirror to gain buzz, funding, and pushing this piece even more into a traveling educational tool.  Here's more information on the conference:  http://sextech.org/  it's $30 for students if any of you are interested in going.

Help needed for Interdisciplinary Project: My First Pregnancy - show dates April 8th-April 14th - Calarts Valencia CA

Interdisciplinary Graduate Thesis Project by Calarts Experimental Animator and IM student Erica Larsen-Dockray "My First Pregnancy" is the ride you can't get off of once you've begun and is seeking energetic actors to join the team. The project will include an installation containing magic mirrors where one sees the anatomical changes of pregnancy on their own body, video games challenging the player to know what a pregnant woman can eat before her nausea gets the best of her, baby developmental stages as fruits and vegetables in jars of goo, plush pregnant appendages with simulated baby movement, and if that weren't enough an interactive carnival ride with living-breathing animatronics enveloped in projection as they re-enact the crazy story Erica has to tell about her experience of being "preggers" all housed in the black and white studio gallery at Calarts.

This project has been gaining support to go into the public arena as an educational outreach tool through planned parenthood's educational department, the California Department of Health and Human Services and other local institutions where it may grow into a national traveling exhibition to universities, clinics, hospitals, conferences, etc.

For more information on this wild adventure please visit the website at www.eekart.com/myfirstpregnancy/

If interested, contact
Erica Larsen-Dockray (creator/director) at erica@eekart.com
Emily Heller (producer) at emilyheller@alum.calarts.edu
Evelyn Ellias (scenic designer) at Evelyn Ellias evi.ellias@gmail.com

ACTORS
We are currently looking for male and female actors to portray as stand ins or animatronic versions of Erica and her husband Jeremiah  and other characters in the dark ride as well as guides to take viewers through it.  There are also opportunities for carnival barkers at the different interactive stations.
We are holding formal auditions February 12th 2pm to 4pm in E70 (in the basement) but please email Emily Heller at emilyheller@alum.calarts.edu to set up a time.

VIDEO TECHS
We are looking for a video tech(s) to help monitor and develop the dark ride video elements and syncopation.  There are multi-screen projections as well as moving projectors, tv monitors, possibly slide projectors etc. that we want to be controlled by our guides as they take visitors through the spaces.  Because the resources of equipment vary we want to keep the overall structure as low tech as possible, i.e. spaces should be functional without pc's.  The development can begin at any point, and not necessarily closer to the exhibition date.  There is a lot of room to play with projection in the different spaces and we are very collaborative bunch.  Also Optima will be using this work to expose' their pico projector so there are possible resume' building opportunities here.

TECHNICAL DIRECTORS
We are currently looking for help with set and display building, technical direction, or anything imagineering related. The project requires a TD who is invested in the project and wants to lend their creativity and hands to the task of creating a bizarre journey through the 9 months of Erica's pregnancy. An ideal candidate for this position would have their own tools, access to a shop, transportation to and from Calarts during the install period and a good eye for materials and construction. The TD will build and oversee building of wall flats, a hell house/ clinic, a shrinking forest and map floor mat, half of a car for projection use and doorways and tracking in between these different vignettes.

12/2011

My First Pregnancy may have a second life! One of my earliest ideas for this piece was a hopeful future of a traveling exhibit to colleges and universities, even high schools across the U.S. Thus far this may be a reality folks, I've been in contact with local OBGYN Dr. Cecilia Hann, who is in full support of My First Pregnancy as an educational tool that is seriously needed in today's public health education (so much that her clinic is donating $500! She also thinks I should write to Oprah). What does this mean for the piece? Lots of funding, sponsor, and marketing possibilities. This is one of my focuses over the break so I will definitely keep you posted on what goes down.

Welcome new Team Members!
I met with some super duper folks this semester who are excited to work with us on the project and we are so lucky to have their talents. :)
Leah Olbrich - Puppetry
Jenee Jernigan - Graphic Design
Emily Mae Heller - Production Management
Elizabeth Eggert - Technical Direction
Jaime Tan - Experimental Animation
Dr. Cecilia Hann - OBGYN, Valencia OBGYN Associates

Fundraising & Marketing
The first part of the break I'm dedicating to hitting up folks for money so My First Pregnancy can look and work its best. I have a former colleague from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln Communications Department, Kim Hachiya on stand-by to help put together a press and media kit for My First Pregnancy to help gain sponsorship, financial support and buzz. :)

The Ride
*Episode breakdowns, designs & ideas*
My First Pregnancy the Ride is coming along but still needs a lot of attention. The uber talented Sara Pocock is offering a slice of animation for Episode 1 "Pre-Prenatal" and Evelyn Ellias our fearless(?) Scenic Designer and I have been racking our brains all semester to think of ways we can translate my story into a physical dark ride. I've thrown out a couple of designs her way which you can see on THE RIDE page.
Also I've been able to break down the final episodic structure into 6/7 sections they are:
Episode 1 - "Pre-Prenatal"
Episode 2 - "The Evangelist Witch Doctor Clinic"
Episode 3 - "The Long Road Ahead"
Episode 4 - "In the Land of Beer and Coffee and Not a Drop to Drink"
Episode 5 - "To Begin Again in L.A." **
Episode 6 - "The Home Stretch"**
Episode 7 - "L&D (Labor and Delivery)"
**5 and 6 may be combined

Each episode has a short description on the website which you can read here:
We still plan to have actors acting like animatronic robots which the amazing Leah Olbrich has offered her insight on making latex masks of Jeremiah and my faces for the actors to wear!! The possibilities are soooo creepy cool. :D

The Stations
The stations are coming along technically and now need some aesthetic attention to their display setup, which our other fearless(?) technical director Elizabeth Eggert is excited to take a stab at. Also the wonderful graphic designer and mother herself Jenee Jernigan will be concepting designs for our logo, and sign displays for the unique interactive stations.

*Magic Mirror & Baby as Fruit/Vegetable - Documentation videos and display concepts up on the website*
Some of you were able to make my MFA 3 Experimental Animation Show in November and witnessed first hand the Magic Mirror and the Baby as Fruit/Vegetable pieces, thanks so much for your thoughts and excitement about them. I got some great feedback that was super encouraging... we're on the right track! I've added documentation from the show to the site as well as the latest quick sketches I've made for these two pieces here:

*Pregnant Appendage - Hacked doll*
The Pregnant Appendage has officially gotten underway! I now have a creepy doll that the wonderful and super talented David Casey helped me hack so it can now respond to touch and next semester we will work again to get it setup with a mic sensor so it will also respond to sound. Angela Ursetta in the costume department has thrown her hat in to help me create the soft fabric surroundings of the appendage. :)

*What Can I Eat? - New physical game setup*
The What Can I Eat? (working title) game is planned for development next semester in Unity 3D! I took a class this semester in the program and aside from it being a pretty amazing application I also was introduced/re-introduced to some great minds in the class including our already eager member Vincent Tang as well as Tyler Scroggins and Melody Yenn as well as others who would be down to help work out the game.
As of now the latest concept for the game is a physical dinner table where the players sit at screens embedded in the table and either as a group or individually race the clock to decide what on the menu they could eat if they were pregnant. Each chair is styled as a different type of restaurant perhaps?

Needs

*Team Members projected involvement schedules*
Brass tax here. Please let me know what and when you are most able to help on the project. It's getting down to a few months off and we need to know as much as we can to plan out our development. Obviously I want to make sure folks can use this project to try something new so make sure to inform me on when you want to get your hands dirty. This may also include the break... I will be here throughout minus a week away Jan.4-11th to good ol' Nebraska.

*More Voice Over for stations*
If you are someone you know may want to record some VO please let me know. I'm looking for a mix of voices for the Mirror, Fruit/Veg babies, and maybe the game. I have scripts for the Fruit/Veg. The mirror scripts are getting looked over by Dr. Hann now. (they need to be condensed for time)

*Worker Bees for setup*
If you would like to be on call for the setup of the Black and White definitely let me know. As of now we don't have a finalized week but we are shooting for March/early April. UNLESS we are able to get it into the New Works Festival which is April/May. The plan will be more concrete by January. (hopefully)

Coming Soon
Logo, signage, and possible patterns from the lovely Jenee Jernigan
3D model of Black and White layout

Help needed for Interdisciplinary Project: My First Pregnancy

Interdisciplinary Thesis Project by Experimental Animator and IM student Erica Larsen-Dockray.  "My First Pregnancy" is the ride you can't get off of once you've begun. The project will include an installation containing magic mirrors where one sees the anatomical changes of pregnancy on their own body, video games challenging the player to know what a pregnant woman can eat before her nausea gets the best of her, baby developmental stages as fruits and vegetables in jars of goo, plush pregnant appendages with simulated baby movement, and if that weren't enough an interactive carnival ride with living-breathing animatronics enveloped in projection as they re-enact the crazy story Erica has to tell about her experience of being "preggers"  all in either the black and white studio or main gallery in March/April 2012.

Many folks have already  thrown in on the project, Evi Ellias will be doing Set/Installation Design,   Mitch Hampton is working with soundscape, Sara Pocock, Sam Amin, and Vincent Tang are contributing animated sequences and Leah Olbrich has  shown an interest in creating some puppets and masks for the live  action sequences.

Erica has a lot on her plate as she is working with animators,  puppeteers, live actors, sound, video projection mapping, and  fantastical immersive installation to create this Pregnancy adventure. It would be fantastic if she could find others to help with this lofty goal to free her up a little so she can focus on developing the designs and material.

Although we are open to help of all flavors we are specifically looking for those who are experienced in graphic design,  production managing, set and display building, technical direction, game development (specifically Unity 3D), costume design/sewing, and imagineering would be great.  Coming in the near future we will also be looking for filmmakers/animators to create short sequences depicting parts of the stories for the ride.

Currently the project has an Interdisciplinary Grant and Erica is putting together a marketing package to drum up more funds for the project.
